Next Gen GIS Architects... Part 3... "The Big Reveal"
Updated: Jan 22
In August 2019, geoworx announced its intention to work with two GIS practitioners who wanted to grow into the next phase of their careers. Scott has experienced the value of mentors who have shaped his career and allowed him to reach places far beyond his imagination. Knowing the difference that those people have made to his career, he wanted to give something back to the NZ GIS community and help others reach their potential.
Ten applicants made contact which, following some discussions and validation of experience, location and current employment status, became four. It was necessary to find two who had similar levels of both enthusiasm and exposure to GIS and IT. The two became apparent in September, and more detailed discussions began.
geoworx is now thrilled to announce that Peter Willoughby and Darko Petrovic will be joining this first round of mentoring. Both have shown a real interest in wanting to understand the deeper IT aspects of working with ArcGIS Enterprise, Esri technology and GIS in general.
Scott has had the pleasure of working with these two guys over the last few years. They are both full of energy, have a willingness to learn and are eager to make a difference to the NZ GIS community. The hope is that one day they may even become geoworxers, but in the meantime, it’s going to be the pleasure of geoworx to support their careers and help them reach new heights of their own.
“We are lucky to be working in an industry which takes advantage of tech development that is getting more complex as time goes on. I am at a point in my career where I want to advance my knowledge of this technology so that I can better enable businesses to get more out of spatial information.”
“I have gotten to a point in my career and my role where certain levels of technical leadership and advice are required. Being on the job demands that one finds less and less time 'on the tools' and rather be in meetings. I have always had greater levels of confidence speaking from experience and so I am looking to get some hands-on experience in systems design and architecture under the guidance and mentorship of some of the great minds in this field. I am also looking to learn, as well as develop some enduring relationships and friendships with all on the program as these are what I find invaluable and enduring in one's career.”
“It has been my pleasure to work with these two guys over the last 4 or 5 years and see them grow. Both have reached a point where they are ready for the next step. If geoworx can help them grow individually, taste a different form of GIS, and grow the NZ GIS talent pool, then it will have been a valuable exercise. I can’t wait to get started.”
